Papua New Guinea to Showcase Its Economic Potential at Osaka World Expo 2025

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has officially confirmed its participation in the Osaka World Expo 2025, marking a significant opportuni..

Strengthening Economic Ties with Japan

Minister Maru highlighted that PNG has benefited for decades from Japan's foreign aid and investments, including development grants estimated at over K6 billion. However, trade between the two countries remains limited, with PNG investments in Japan under K400 million, showing a clear imbalance.

Calling for a more balanced economic relationship, Maru said, "We must return the favour and start working on an economic trade partnership agreement — something that has not been done in the past 50 years."

Showcasing PNG’s Opportunities to the World

With Japan ranked among PNG's top three foreign investors, alongside China and Australia, the Osaka Expo offers PNG a platform to attract further investments and build new trade partnerships. Maru emphasized that PNG will use its participation to promote key sectors, including:

  • Agriculture
  • Tourism
  • Mineral resources
  • Labor opportunities

The government is investing in a K6 million national pavilion in Osaka, which will serve as a central hub for promoting PNG’s products, culture, and business opportunities.

High-Level Representation and Events

PNG’s presence at the Expo will also be supported by high-level diplomatic engagement. Prime Minister James Marape will lead an investment conference in Tokyo, aimed at strengthening PNG's ties with Japanese investors and businesses. Additionally, he will participate in a flag-raising ceremony on July 12, 2025, to commemorate PNG Day in Tokyo, further highlighting the nation's presence and engagement in Japan.

An Opportunity to Diversify and Grow

Minister Maru noted that PNG’s economy is at a pivotal point, with a need to diversify beyond natural resources and grow into new sectors. “It’s time we step up to the task of being a growing economy that needs investment,” he said.

He also stressed that PNG's participation in the Expo would align with public expectations, as citizens are increasingly asking what role PNG will play on such a global platform.
